Fuel Saving Dos and Don'ts

Fuel Saving Dos and Don'ts

Check tire pressure at least monthly. Tire pressures are found on the driver’s door jamb or in the owner’s manual. The number indicated on the tire sidewall is the maximum safe pressure, not the recommended pressure. Low tire pressure can reduce fuel mileage by 5% and create a safety hazard. Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold or cool, not after freeway driving. It is best to have your own tire pressure gauge, which can be bought for less than $5.00 Drive smoothly and anticipate traffic lights, and no quick starts. Act as if there is an egg under your gas pedal, and accelerate slowly. Watch the traffic lights ahead so you have to use your brakes as little as possible. Plan your route and get to know the traffic lights. Every time you use your brakes, you waste energy and brake life.  With a manual transmission, shift to a higher gear soon rather than later. With an automatic transmission, keep it in overdrive, even in town. Maintain your vehicle ... read more

Don't Get Caught By The Cold

Don't Get Caught By The Cold

Winter weather can be miserable for driving. These tips will help make your upcoming journeys safer and more comfortable. Make sure all windows are clear before driving. Sight accounts for about 95% of the sensory input you need to drive safely. Always scrape all windows of ice before driving, and wipe the fog off all inside windows. Make sure that the “fresh” air mode is selected on vehicles that have the choice, mostly Japanese vehicles. Putting on the air conditioning will help “dry” the air during moist winter months so the defroster will work faster. Most newer cars put on the A/C automatically when “defrost” is picked.  The only time I ever will recommend warming up your car before driving is when you need to thaw ice on the outside and clear fog on the inside of the windows. Note, don’t leave your car unattended, thieves can drive away. Coat all your door weather stripping with a thin coat of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to preven ... read more

Check-engine light matters

Check-engine light matters

If your check-engine light is, something is wrong. This is a no brainer. But it can be easy to forget what a benefit it is to have your vehicle's electronic control unit (ECU) always scanning input from sensors to make sure the engine and related systems are up to par. Yes, the check-engine light "knows" when something is amiss. The problem is that some people choose to ignore it, saying the cause is just "pollution-related stuff" or, worse, they hear from someone at a shop that "it's not important". When I hear that, I know that particular shop didn't have the expertise to fix the problem. One of the problems of driving with a check-engine light on is that the light doesn't get any brighter, or start blinking to alert you that something very bad is going to happen. It only has one communication mode: light on. And as long as it is on, the ECU can be storing many fault codes, some of which can indicate a very big problem. Of all the ... read more

Who owns what in the auto industry?

Who owns what in the auto industry?

An interesting thing to consider in the automotive world is who owns the vehicles we drive. I still remember the slogan “Buy American”, which originated during the time when the Japanese vehicles started to come into this country. I heard that the bigger car manufacturers were not bothered by the Japanese vehicles in the 60s. But as the 70s came and the Japanese vehicles were gaining more and more market share, that concern flourished. One thing for sure: competition results in better products, because people cast their votes with were they spend money. The consumer’s wins in this, for vehicles today are of the highest quality ever. As per other articles I have written, vehicles are the most technologically advanced thing most of us ever own. But who are the competitors, and who owns what in the world of automobiles imported into or made in this country? Here’s a breakdown of the major players competing in the global auto industry:     &nbs ... read more

All abuzz for hybrid, electric cars

All abuzz for hybrid, electric cars

The future of the automobile in the next few years is going to be very exciting - even incredible. As electronics, computers and great designs get more defined and less expensive, they enter the automotive world with more frequency. Electronics and electric motors are so very dependable now, cars are chock full of them. I still remember the cars of the 1960s, when many people avoided options like power windows because it meant just one more thing to break. That is mot the case anymore; just about all cars in the United States have power windows. The advanced electric technologies in modern automobiles are incredible, what with autopilot capabilities and electric motors that have landed both in hybrids and full-electric vehicles such as the Tesla and the Nissan Leaf. The result is more powerful vehicles with better fuel mileage and lower emissions; this is the best of all three worlds. For me, hybrids represent the best of these technologies. The easy definition o ... read more

Saving money on automobile maintenance and repair

What is the right amount in vehicle maintenance? This is one of the questions that is always going through my mind is.  Too much and you’re wasting money; not enough the vehicle life and dependability of you vehicle flies out the window. The owner’s manual has great information on what to do and when. But-and this is a big but-is the manufacturer's recommendations  sufficient to ensure the vehicle will have a long life? On one end of the spectrum is the “up sell” of fluid changes (the oil or fluid wiped on a white rag showing how dirty it is, shocks that are seeping slightly or the air filter that is somewhat dirty. (Remember, a slightly dirty air filter will NOT affect your fuel mileage, advanced electronics engine controls compensate for this on vehicles 95 and newer. A real plugged air filter should be replaced because it will cut engine power)  The other end of the spectrum is oil services every 20,000 miles, no reco ... read more

Automotive myths a waste of time and money

Automotive myths a waste of time and money

As a long term automotive shop owner, I work at giving my customers the proper guidance for longevity of their vehicle without over spending their money. It is a balance that I have worked diligently on. The one event that has stuck in my memory is when a customer wanted another “tune up” 15,000 after the last one was done. I very kindly and patiently explained that newer vehicles just didn’t need service that frequently. When I was done with my spiel, I was feeling good about what I had said, my integrity, and saving this good customer money. What his response was took me off my feet. He said that his dad told him (back in the 60’s) that a car should be tuned up every year. He told me it I had no place saying that his deceased father was incorrect and then hung up. I never did hear from this customer again. Times have changed many things. Vehicles of today are so much more advanced then vehicles of yesteryear, procedures are different. Ever since that day, I ... read more
